    Preparatory education for an upper secondary qualification (TUVA)

    Apply for TUVA education if you need support for strengthening your learning skills and Finnish proficiency and would like to move on to vocational education and training suitable for you. The scope of the training is 38 weeks.

    Who is the service for?

    TUVA education is intended for learners who:  

    • do not have an upper secondary qualification  
    • who need preparatory education for one reason or another.  

    TUVA education is intended for both people of compulsory school age and adults who require skills and/or guidance and support in order to move on to upper secondary education or vocational education and training.

    How can I participate in the service?

    You can apply for TUVA education through rolling admissions via the Studyinfo service (studyinfo.fi) or in the second joint application procedure for higher education in spring.

    Conditions for participating in the service:

    TUVA education is intended for applicants who have completed the primary and lower secondary education syllabus or a previous corresponding syllabus

    The student’s language of study (Finnish) must be at a level where they benefit from the preparatory education and have the chance to learn the necessary skills for upper secondary education during the preparatory education. 

    The Finnish proficiency level of applicants who do not speak it as their first language must be at least A1.3–A2.1, depending on the education provider. If necessary, language proficiency testing is arranged for foreign-language speakers before student selections.  

    Benefits of participating in the service:

    The general goal of TUVA education is to gain learning skills that will allow the student to apply for general upper secondary education or vocational education and training and successfully complete these studies. Learning skills may refer to things such as proficiency in the language used in the studies/qualification, suitable study skills and life management skills. 

    During TUVA education, you will receive support and guidance on how to clarify your goals for the future as well as help with gaining the skills required to enrol in upper secondary education and successfully complete the studies. During TUVA education: 

    • your Finnish proficiency will improve
    • your study skills and other skills will develop before you enrol in upper secondary education
    • you will learn more about different occupations and sectors
    • you will be introduced to working life and you will learn working life skills at a workplace
    • you will learn more about the different options in vocational education and training and general upper secondary education. 

    During the education, you will receive guidance and support for how to apply for upper secondary education.

    Additionally, TUVA education allows you to raise your primary and lower secondary school grades if it is necessary in order to be admitted to the school of your choice. Furthermore, students can complete studies included in general upper secondary education and vocational education and training.  

    How is the service organised?

    Implementation

    The scope of the training is 38 weeks, and it must be completed within one year. Students may also participate in TUVA education for a shorter period of time in accordance with their personal goals and skills needs.

    TUVA education includes an education and training unit that is common for everyone, called ‘Study and career planning skills’. An individual study path is planned together with the student in accordance with the student’s goals and skills needs.

    • Everyday skills and social inclusion (0–20 weeks)
    • Elective studies (0–10 weeks)
