    Who is the service for?

    You can apply for general upper secondary education for adults if you are interested in completing the Finnish matriculation examination, the general upper secondary school syllabus or individual general upper secondary courses. The minimum age requirement for general upper secondary education for adults is 18.

    How is the service organised?

    General upper secondary education for adults is built on the foundation of the primary and lower secondary education syllabus. It prepares you for further studies at a university, university of applied sciences and in vocational education and training that is based on the general upper secondary school syllabus. The knowledge and skills learned in general upper secondary education for adults are demonstrated with a general upper secondary education certificate, matriculation examination certificate and other demonstrations. General upper secondary education for adults prevents social exclusion by offering the opportunity to continue or start general upper secondary studies as an adult. The education guides students to prepare plans for their future, learn to learn and keep developing their skills continuously.

    Educational institutions that provide general upper secondary education for adults may provide their students with the opportunity to:

    • complete the general upper secondary school syllabus
    • complete the syllabus for one or more general upper secondary school subjects
    • complete individual study units
    • complete other general education subjects or cross-curricular themes under general upper secondary education
    • complete the matriculation examination or a part of it.

    In general upper secondary education for adults, the general upper secondary school syllabus comprises at least 88 credits. General upper secondary education for adults consists of compulsory and national elective studies, as specified in Annex 2 of the Government Decree on General Upper Secondary Education (810/2018). The studies may also include local elective studies decided by the education provider, as described in the curriculum.
