Who is the service for?
Our program is open to everyone over 18 with the motivation to learn to programming and start a fresh career in tech. It is an excellent fit for career changers, as no prior coding experience, specific educational background, or degrees are required.
As an international community, Hive Helsinki is also well-suited for immigrants and international talent. The studies are conducted entirely in English, so Finnish language proficiency is not required.

How can I participate in the service?
How to Apply
The application process evaluates your motivation and suitability for Hive’s project-based curriculum. The process consists of the following steps:
- Online Test: A logic and memory gameexternal link, opens in a new tab. Pass this to unlock the next step.
- Check-in: A mandatory info session. Attend this to gain access to Sprint registration.
- Selection Sprint: A 3-week intensive period on campus that serves as our entrance exam. During the Sprint, you will solve coding challenges and be introduced to peer-to-peer learning. Advance registration is required. Please note that student financial aid (Kela) is not available during the Sprint.

Conditions for participating in the service
Who Can Apply?
No previous tech experience or degrees are needed to apply to Hive! We only require:
- Age: You must be at least 18 years old.
- Residence Permit: You must be a Finnish citizen, a citizen of another EU/EEA country, or hold a valid residence permit in Finland for the entire duration of your studies.
- Language Skills: Sufficient proficiency in English. Since all learning materials and peer-to-peer communications are in English, you must be able to function fluently in an English-speaking environment. No formal language certificate is required.
- Commitment: You must be prepared to study full-time and take full responsibility for your own learning.
How is the service organised?
Hive Helsinki is a new type of hands-on coding school offering an 18-month, tuition-free, and full-time program for those interested in software development. The education is based entirely on peer-to-peer learning and project work, without traditional teachers or lectures. The program is specifically designed with efficiency and employability in mind, providing a fast yet deep pathway into the IT industry by focusing on both technical excellence and essential workplace meta-skills, such as problem-solving and teamwork.
How Studying at Hive Differs from Traditional School
- The Method: Peer-to-peer learning with zero lectures. You’ll master code by solving real-world projects and participating in peer evaluations.
- What You’ll Learn:
- Programming Fundamentals: Go, Unix, Git, and Algorithms.
- Applications Development: Full-stack web dev, databases, and APIs.
- Specialisation modules: DevOps, Cloud and System Administration, or Mobile Applications Development.
- Duration: Studies progress at an individual pace, but the average and expected completion time is approximately 18 months.
- Location and Facilities: Education takes place on-site in Helsinki (Haapaniemenkatu 5). The campus is open to students 24/7, allowing for flexible working hours, although the program is designed for full-time commitment.
