    Who is the service for?

The service is intended for all unemployed jobseekers aged 18 to 29 who live in Helsinki and are not full-time students. The service is particularly well-suited for those without clear career plans or who want to try out work in a particular field. The service is also suitable for those who want more routine in their everyday life. A work try-out period at a Youth Workshop is particularly well-suited for those who are already thinking about taking the next step into education or directly into the workforce. The work try-out period is also suitable for those who have professional skills, but have not found a job that matches their qualification or degree, or who have not been able to join the workforce because of challenges in their everyday life.

How can I participate in the service?

To be accepted for a work try-out at the Youth Workshops, you must first register as an unemployed jobseeker with Helsinki Employment Services. After that, you will need to fill in the online application form for the Youth Workshops. Most of the workshops accept applicants through rolling admissions. Once you have submitted your application, the workshop employment counsellor will contact you within about two weeks and invite you for an interview.

Benefits of participating in the service

At the Youth Workshops, you will develop both your general working life skills and your skills in vocational tasks. At the workshops, you will receive guidance on your job-seeking skills and how to realise your career plans. Receiving support and guidance on your job-seeking skills will improve your chances of finding a job.

During a work try-out, you can explore the study options available in the field and also receive guidance on how to apply for studies. At some of the workshops, you can complete a part of a vocational qualification. The workshops will provide you with guidance on everyday skills and how to manage your own life, for example. During the activities, you will also receive guidance on how to find a job on the open labour market and pay-subsidised work. For a service promoting employment, such as a work try-out, you will receive unemployment benefits according to your situation, and you will also receive compensation for expenses (€9/day) for the duration of your participation in the service.

Conditions for participating in the service

When participating in the service, you must be an unemployed jobseeker living in Helsinki and under the age of 30. Participation in the service requires you to be able to work for six hours a day, five days a week. At the workshop, your language proficiency must be at a level where you are able to understand and comply with the occupational safety rules of the workplace. To participate in the service, you must commit to goal-oriented workshop activities.

Participation in the service requires you to log in to the Wilma personal register in order to fill in the application form.

    How is the service organised?

    • The Youth Workshops offer work try-out placements for young Helsinki residents. A work try-out will give you the opportunity to explore the café, metalworking and media industries, as well as crafts, writing and programming. A work try-out period can last for up to six months, after which the aim is to find a job or a suitable place to study.
    • During the work try-out period, you will be introduced to the workshop tasks, occupational safety, tools and methods, and you will gain vocational skills. At some of the workshops, you will have the opportunity to complete a part of a vocational qualification.
    • During the work try-out period, you will be able to complete card or licence training to improve your chances to find employment. You will receive a work try-out certificate for the work try-out period.
You can apply for the workshops using the application form available on the Helsinki Vocational College (Stadin AO) website, which you can find here.
    • The workshop activities are based on contact teaching provided on weekdays between 9.00 and 15.00. The shifts at Café Villa Ullas are spread over every day of the week (including weekends) and take place five days a week, between 8.00 and 17.00. A workshop period can last for up to six months. The workshop activities are organised at 11 different locations around Helsinki.
    • Each trainee participating in a work try-out will be assigned a personal instructor, who will guide them through their work duties. You will also have access to the career guidance services provided by an employment counsellor, and some of the locations will provide the services of a personal coach to support your life management.
