    Who is the service for?

A work try-out is suitable for you if you:

    • do not have a vocational education
    • want to change your career
    • are thinking about becoming an entrepreneur
    • have been out of the workforce for a long time (e.g. taking care of your children at home) and are planning on re-entering the workforce (a work try-out tests whether your skills are up to date).

You do not have to be unemployed, but a work try-out is not necessarily an appropriate service for someone who is already employed. If you are working under a zero-hour contract and rarely have work duties, a work try-out may be a good opportunity to familiarise yourself better with a specific work duty.

PLEASE NOTE! A work try-out is not intended for obtaining work experience. If you have completed studies that do not directly prepare you for a particular profession or type of work, a work try-out may be justified to clarify your career options."

Municipality of residence does not matter

    All people of working age

How can I participate in the service?

As a general rule, it is up to you to find an employer and work try-out place. Before the work try-out starts, a written contract is drawn up and signed by you, the organiser of the work try-out and the employment authority.

    The contract specifies:

    • the objective of the work try-out and your duties
    • the overall duration and the daily and weekly duration. Your work try-out contract must include a provision about potential evening and/or weekend work.
    • Additionally, the contract must name the person who will be responsible for supervising your work try-out at the workplace.

The employment authority will confirm from the Finnish Trade Register, Register of Foundations or Register of Associations that the ex-officio representative of the organiser of the work try-out has the right to sign for the organiser. The employer will inform the shop steward of the workplace about your contract.

During the work try-out, you will continue to receive the same unemployment benefit as you would if you were unemployed.

Conditions for participating in the service:

A work try-out is not intended for obtaining work experience. If a recent graduate’s studies did not directly prepare them for a particular profession or type of work, a work try-out may be justified to clarify their career options. A work try-out can be arranged if the organiser of the work try-out has offered work to the employees they have discharged or laid-off or their part-time employees as required by the Employment Contracts Act before drawing up the work try-out contract. The provider of the work try-out opportunity is responsible for ensuring that there is no barrier to the work try-out under the Employment Contracts Act.

Benefits of participating in the service:

A work try-out is a good way to test your work ability in an actual work environment if you have been absent from the workforce for an extended period of time. It allows you to determine whether your skills are up to date with regard to the requirements of the industry or the position. A work try-out can also be one link in the chain if you are looking to change your profession or industry due to health issues, for instance. Through a work try-out, you can make yourself known to the employer, which may be an easier way to find a job.

You will receive the same unemployment benefit during the work try-out as you normally would. If you and your assigned specialist tentatively agree on this service and record the potential work try-out as a task in your employment plan, you may receive compensation for expenses from the payer of the unemployment benefit for the days on which you participate in the work try-out.

    How is the service organised?

    Implementation

As a work try-out is not an employment relationship, you will not receive a salary for this period. Instead of receiving a salary, you will be paid the normal amount of unemployment benefit corresponding to your situation.

During the work try-out, you will carry out general work performed at the workplace. The organiser of the work try-out is responsible for providing guidance and supervision.

PLEASE NOTE! During the work try-out, you are not allowed to perform tasks that are usually carried out independently without guidance and supervision (e.g. car transport, unless supervised by the organiser of the work try-out).

A work try-out is not intended to be the probationary period for an employment relationship. A work try-out may last for up to six months. The daily and weekly working hours may vary, depending on your situation. However, your working hours may not exceed 4–8 hours at a time, five days a week.

Your work try-out may also be organised abroad. If the plan is to organise your work try-out abroad, the employment authority must pay special attention to the organisation of guidance and supervision.

The organiser of the work try-out notifies the payer of the unemployment benefit about any absences by the work try-out participant on days on which the participant should have participated in the work try-out.

The location of the work try-out depends on the location of the work try-out’s organiser.
