    Qualification training for biomedical laboratory scientists who have completed their degree outside the EU or EEA

    Qualification training for persons with a degree in biomedical laboratory science completed outside the EU/EEA, assigned by the Finnish Supervisory Authority to obtain the right to work as a biomedical laboratory scientist (laboratoriohoitaja).

    The price of the education depends on the extent of the studies.
    Theoretical studies: 25 euros per credit.
    Practical training: 45 euros per credit. The price of the training includes a supervision fee paid to the employer.

    The education is intended for persons who:

    • have completed a bachelor-level biomedical laboratory science degree outside the EU or EEA
    • have applied to the Finnish Supervisory Agency for the right to work as a medical laboratory technologist (laboratoriohoitaja) in Finland and have been assigned additional studies for professional licensing
    • have Finnish language skills at least at level B2 (CEFRexternal link, opens in a new tab)

    1. Familiarise yourself with the qualification training in biomedical laboratory science and complete the electronic application form on Metropolia University of Applied Sciences’ websiteexternal link, opens in a new tab. Applications are accepted on a continuous basis.
    2. Applicants who meet the requirements are invited to an interview, after which the admission decision is made.
    3. A personal study plan and schedule are prepared for admitted students together with the responsible teacher.

    Benefits of participating in the service

    • Once you have completed all the additional studies required by the Finnish Supervisory Authority, you can apply to it for the right to practise the profession in Finland. You can be licensed as a healthcare professional as a biomedical laboratory scientist (laboratoriohoitaja).
    • Your professional skills and competence will develop, and you will become familiar with the practices of the field in Finland.
    • Your professional Finnish language skills will improve.

    Conditions for participating in the service

    • A bachelor-level higher education degree in biomedical laboratory science completed outside the EU and EEA
    • Finnish language skills at least at level B2
    • A decision by the Finnish Supervisory Agency requiring additional studies for professional licensing
    • Sufficient IT skills and the necessary equipment for studying

    How can I participate in the service?

    In the qualification training, you complete the additional studies and practical training required by the Finnish Supervisory Authority. After these, you can apply for the right to work in Finland as a biomedical laboratory scientist (medical laboratory technologist).

    Each student receives a personal study plan. All students complete the course “Health Care Professional in Finland: Biomedical Laboratory Scientists (2 ECTS).” Other studies depend on the additional studies assigned to you by the authority.

    The language of instruction is Finnish. Studies are carried out together with degree students, following the same schedules, and some components can be completed independently. The timing and place of practical training are agreed separately with the employer.

    Opetus järjestetään pääasiassa lähiopetuksena Myllypuron kampuksella. Opetukseen voi kuulua myös etäopetusta.

    Työelämäharjoittelun paikka sovitaan jokaiselle opiskelijalle erikseen yhdessä työnantajan kanssa ja se toteutetaan kliinisessä työympäristössä.
