Qualification training for physiotherapists with a degree completed outside the EU/EEA
Additional studies for those who completed a physiotherapy degree outside the EU/EEA. The Finnish Supervisory Agency has assigned you extra studies and/or a clinical placement so you can obtain the right to work as a physiotherapist in Finland.

The cost depends on the volume of studies. Theoretical studies: EUR 25 per ECTS credit; clinical placement: EUR 45 per ECTS credit. The price of the placement includes the guidance fee paid to the employer.

The training is intended for persons who:
- have completed a physiotherapy degree abroad (at least Bachelor level)
- have applied to the Finnish Supervisory Agency (formerly Valvira)external link, opens in a new tab for the right to practise as a physiotherapist in Finland and have been assigned additional studies and/or clinical placement to obtain professional practice rights
- have Finnish language skills at least at level B2 (Common European Framework of Reference, CEFRexternal link, opens in a new tab).

- First apply to the Finnish Supervisory Agency for the right to work as a physiotherapist in Finland.
- You will receive a decision stating which additional studies and/or clinical placement you need.
- Then fill in the application form for additional physiotherapy studies on Metropolia University of Applied Sciences’ websiteexternal link, opens in a new tab.
- Attach to your application:
- a copy of your degree certificate and transcript of records
- a copy of the Finnish Supervisory Agency’s decision
- a copy of your language test certificate (if you have an official test)
- your CV and employment certificates.
- A personal study plan and schedule are prepared for admitted students together with the responsible teacher.

Conditions for participating in the service
- A higher education degree in physiotherapy completed abroad (at least Bachelor level)
- Finnish language skills at least at level B2
- A decision from the Finnish Supervisory Agency requiring additional studies and/or clinical placement to obtain professional practice rights
- Sufficient IT skills and access to a computer and internet connection for completing the studies.
How can I participate in the service?
Participants complete the additional studies and clinical placement required by the Finnish Supervisory Agency in order to obtain the right to practise as a physiotherapist in Finland. A personal study plan (HOPS) is prepared for each participant based on the Agency’s decision.
The studies usually include:
- Health Care Professional in Finland: Physiotherapists, 1 ECTS – competence assessment, personal plan, career and study guidance; implemented as individual face‑to‑face or online meetings and online studies
- Social and Health Care Legislation, Service System and Ethics, 3 ECTS – independent online studies
- Clinical placement, usually 10 ECTS – scope and content according to the Agency’s decision; time and place agreed separately. The student is responsible for finding the placement, supported by the teacher.
If the Finnish Supervisory Agency requires additional studies, it will be assessed separately whether they can be completed together with Metropolia’s degree students. Any such additional studies are mainly carried out as contact teaching on the Myllypuro Campus, but may also include online teaching.

The studies are carried out mainly online. Some courses may also include in‑person instruction. This depends on the student’s personal study plan.
The time and place of the work placement are agreed separately with the employer.

Studies start flexibly, and applications are open continuously (rolling admission). The exact schedule and duration of the studies depend on the decision of the Licensing and Supervisory Authority and on the student’s personal study plan. The timing of the work placement is agreed separately together with the employer.
